The Anti-Consultant

October 10, 2023 | by Ed Hoffman

There’s a classic UPS commercial where two consultants sit across from a CEO, enthusiastically pitching ideas for improving the company? The CEO, equally excited, says, “Great – go do it!” But the consultants reply, “We don’t actually do what we propose. We just propose.” It’s funny, but it’s also a bit too close to reality for comfort when it comes to many consultancy teams.

So, what should you be looking for in a consultant team? At CBS we call it the Anti-Consultant, a role focused on action, steeped in industry expertise, and equipped with high-level and hard-won knowledge about the complexities of real-world business, not just the theoretical knowledge found in business books.

Why You Need an Anti-Consultant

While strategy and knowledge are undoubtedly important, what truly sets the Anti-Consultant apart is their ability to apply this knowledge to the real world effectively. Here’s what you should expect from the Anti-Consultant:

  1. Build It: Implementing Strategy

An Anti-Consultant doesn’t stop at crafting a strategy; they roll up their sleeves and get to work. After thorough analysis and research, they take that strategy and put it into action. They work side by side with you to ensure that the plan is executed effectively.

  1. Operate It: Live the Changes

The Anti-Consultant doesn’t just provide you with recommendations and leave you to figure it out. They operate alongside you, making necessary adjustments on the go. They experience the changes alongside your team, ensuring that the improvements become a part of your daily operations.

  1. Transfer It: Empower Your Team

The Anti-Consultant doesn’t create dependence; they build independence. They teach and transfer the processes, knowledge, and skills required for your team to sustain and improve upon the changes. They equip you to solve your problems, even when they’re not around.

To put it in terms of the old adage, the Anti-Consultant doesn’t just give you the fish or even teach you how to fish. They go the extra mile. They accompany you to the sporting goods store, help you choose the right equipment, wade into the water with you, fish all day, figure out what’s working and what’s not, and then teach you the entire process from start to finish. They ensure you understand every step of the journey before parting ways.

It’s a far cry from the consultants in that old commercial who handed the CEO a report and expected him to believe they would magically implement everything. An Anti-Consultant is your partner in transformation, not just a voice in the boardroom.

If you’re looking for a team of consultants, find one that isn’t just there to propose. Find a team willing and able to build, operate, and transfer the changes your organization needs to thrive.
